Notes:

Tradition: Joao Rodriques was born illigitimately. One story says that his
mother, Carolina, was raped in the fields by her employer, a well-to-do
plantation owner. Joao's father may be a Pimentel, as the name has been
retained by the family, or he may have taken his father's name ("Rodrigues")
when he traveled to America.This story, or a variation, has been told to me by
virtually all of Joao's children - though each has told me only on the
condition of secrecy!
